Call y'er mum

Parents. As small children they are our heroes, and no one on Earth could be stronger or smarter than them.  As teenagers, we think we know so much more than they do, and sometimes we think they're un-cool. As adults it is so important to connect with our parents and learn a little more about them as people.  What are their hopes, dreams?  What of their past do they wish they would have changed? Which people mean the most to them and why? Sometime today contact at least one parent or a person who fills a parental role for you, and tell them how much they mean to you.  Sounds hard? Sounds simple? Just give it a try and see how you feel.

  1. I have always been fascinated with how our relationships with our parents evolves over time in the way that you describe: first adoration, secondly embarrasement, then respect.

    1. It really does change doesn't it. My relationship with my parents became super strong during my illness. We now see each other once a wek and talk every second day. I am so grateful to have them in my life.

  2. Unfortunately I have been parenting my parents for over 10 years because of a series of bad decisions they made, and a gambling addiction, and now their financial situation keeps getting worse. Although I love them, there is no respect, only anger.

    1. Nooooo! That is terrible. It must take such a strong person to have to parent their own parents. What happened before the 10 years, was the relationship ok back then?

  3. Yes it was OK, but now that I look back on things, the problems were hidden from me. It was like a house of cards and then it all fell down.

  4. I actually used to really struggle with my parents. We had such differing viewpoints and I was ready to cut them out of my life forever. But I had the chance to run away to college, and shut them out for awhile. After a few years, I was able to reconnect and realize how much I actually valued the relationship, despite how many issues we had.
